Caribbean Monk Seals Are Extinct

Caribbean Monk Seals were such cute creatures. Unfortunately, they are extinct now !

Caribbean Monk Seals were a species of seals native to the Caribbeans and now are extinct. The Caribbean seals main predators were sharks and actually humans. People were haunting them for their oil and their meat. This is so sad !

There are only around 600 Mediterranean and 1,100 Hawaiian Monk Seals alive today in the wild.

Last confirmed sighting of the Caribbean Monk Seals was in 1952 somewhere between Jamaica and Nicaragua. It was declared as extinct in the United States of America in 2008 after a search for these seals which lasted over five years. National Oceanic, the Atmospheric Administration and National Marine Fisheries Service organized this search. Caribbean Monks were close relatives to the Hawaiian Monk Seal and Mediterranean Monk Seal too.
