Founded in the year 2011, the Dujiangyan Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding specialises in re-introducing the giant pandas into the wild. The center is part of the Chengdu Research Base which holds over 108 bears in captivity, making for also the largest artificial breeding population of pandas in the entire world.
Giant pandas are bears native to China, where they have a status of a national treasure. Even with this exalted status, giant pandas are really in danger of extinction. Only about 1,600 of pandas still live in the wild.
They are also called great pandas, part colored bears, bamboo bears and also white bears too. The giant pandas are different from the other pandas by their really large size and black and white coloring too. The bold coloring may provide camouflage for them.
Great pandas really live up to their name. They are about 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters) tall and also weigh up to 300 lbs. Pandas are actually loners. They really dislike being around other pandas so much that they have a heightened sense of smell. The smell lets them know when another panda is somewhere nearby so they can avoid it.
