Taiwan is taking a big step forward! It is officially the first country in Asia to ban the consumpion of dog and cat meat! Good job Taiwan!
Taiwan is now the first country in Asia to ban the consumption of dog and cat meat, as increasing pet ownership across the continent saw attitudes shift. The revised Animal Protection Act imposes a fine of up to 250,000 Taiwan dollars ( about $7000) for eating dog or also cat meat. The penalties for animal cruelty or slaughter were also raised to up to 2 years in prison and fines of up to 2m Taiwan dollars ($60,000). Repeat offenders can go to prison up to 5 years and face evne stiffer fines. Also those who get convicted under the new law may also be publicly shamed, with their names and also photos published by the government. This is really a big thing and hopefully other countries in Asia will also implement this in the near future!
The law also makes it illegal to “walk” a pet while riding a scooter or also if driving a car. The amendment still needs to get signed by the president, but it should be done by the end of April.
Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, is a big dog and cat lover. She frequently posed with her two cats during her last campaign. She also adopted 3 retired guide dogs just last year.
The most notorious mass slaughter of dogs for food occurs every year in China during the Yulin dog meat festival. About 10,000 dogs get killed every year throughout the southern city of Yulin. The festival has increasingly attracted the rage of animal rights activists from all over the world. Hopefully soon this horrible slaughter will stop once and for all. If all the countries accept and implenet this law dogs and cats in Asia will finally have some rights and protection!
